Summary: Shane has feelings for Lori. And is not yet completely crazytown.

Most of the time he's jealous that Rick always comes in first. Blindingly jealous. A few years ago, there'd been only one scholarship at Harrison County High (not that there'd been many students even going to college), and Rick had gotten that, even though Shane had needed it just as bad. He was better at winning over their teachers then, their professors now. He still manages to win people over with just a smile, whereas Shane's better at putting them off, he knows that. He knows that sometimes he comes across a little too intense, he gets too attached, too involved. Someday, when they graduate and make their way back to their hometown, full-time again, Rick's going to get the better job. Rick's going to be sheriff someday, just like Shane's daddy was, and Shane's gonna be stuck in his shadow for the rest of their lives.

But this weekend, he's pretty happy about it. Rick's gone, off on a specialized search and rescue training. Training that only one person from their Public and Private Safety class could be chosen for. Shane didn't know why he'd even bothered to put his name in the running.

He'd been pissed at first. Annoyed just like he always was. But now that he was back home in Cynthiana for the weekend - now that he was sitting up on a dock of the Licking River, watching Lori, laying out on a beach towel, eyes closed, her two-piece hiding hardly anything and still, way too much - he really didn't mind. Let Rick go away for the weekend. Let him have Lori all to himself, for once.

The win he resents Rick for the most. Why'd it have to be Rick's little brother who brought her to the New Years Eve party? Why had Rick agreed to chaperone, then actually done it? Why the hell hadn't he gone to? Rick had asked him over, but he blew it off, saying he wasn't gonna be caught at a high school party, not when Maggie Jenks had agreed to go out with him that night, not when he'd heard how good at easy she was.

So, Shane had gotten Maggie that night, and Rick had ended up kissing Lori at midnight.

It hadn't taken long for Rick to introduce him to Lori. To bring her around, introducing her to everyone. And it had taken Shane even less time to realize what all Rick saw in her.

She's beautiful. She's smart, smarter than she'll ever realize, or Rick will ever encourage her to. She makes him laugh. She makes everyone laugh; she's just that kind of person. And he's glad she's in their circle, glad she's his best friend too now. It's not Rick's fault that he feels the way he does, and Shane knows that.

Still, on the nights when they're back in town and Lori invites Shane out to dinner with them, out to the movies, and Rick gives him that look, the one he knows means get lost, he'll still go anyway. Because maybe he'll be the first person ever to not let Rick win, to not put him first. Because Lori wants him there, and the three of them have been together for long enough now, that Rick has to know Shane puts Lori first now too. They both do, and it's why Rick doesn't complain or argue when he sticks around as third wheel.

He glances over at her again, and this time she's looking in his direction. Her sunglasses are pulled down, and she sits up, pulling her long, dark hair into a ponytail. What he wouldn't give to reach over and pull it down, brush it back behind her ears, reach for the halter tie of her bathing suit and --

"Race you in." She interrupts his thoughts, and before he can respond, she's already splashed down into the water, and he doesn't hesitate to follow her in.

They swim around for a few minutes, taking turns trying to splash each other, to dunk each other. He rarely lets her have the upper hand on purpose, and she knows it, and he's pretty sure she likes that about him. Finally, she holds up her hand (her left hand, the hand on which no ring gleams yet, but Rick's already asked her, he's already promised it to her, and Shane's heart hurts when it beats), and calls truce.

They swim their way back to the dock, and she sits, using her towel to dry out her hair. The sun is already drying it, leaving it hanging in damp, unruly curls, and he can no longer resist the temptation.

He expects her to pull away the second his mouth touches hers, but she doesn't. She doesn't, and he can't believe, but her lips part just slightly, and her tongue sweeps over his bottom lip quickly, and then he's tasting her, fisting his hand in her hair, and then she's pulling away, and looking at him, and he wants to feel terrible and guilty and ashamed, but he just can't bring himself to do it.

"That," she says after a long - too long - moment, "never happened."

Then she is up and gathering her things, and he knows she wants to be taken home, back to wait for Rick to return for a few hours before he and Shane have to return to school, and she's left alone again. They don't speak of the kiss during the drive, and soon enough she's back to herself, singing along with something on the radio, laughing at his lame jokes, and he doesn't understand how nothing and everything could have changed.

That never happened. Her voice, that soft lift that always seems to be asking a question when it shouldn't, echoes in his head as he watches her make her way up her parents front walk, into her home. She turns before the door closes, giving him a smile, and a wave, and his heart lurches as he dares to wonder what else he can make never happen.

Oh! Am I really reading TWD fanfic here? OMG!
*rubs eyes*
That was great, little tips of the hat to all different bits we learn through the canon story.
Loved it and yay for the challenge. Points for you!

Glad you liked it! I have to be honesty, it was kind of weird writing it. New people, new territory. I was worried I don't know them well enough to give them words.

A new picture was released yesterday, but unfortunately it was just a zombie missing it's face, or something like that. Still no Sarah. :(
